Ten Tips to Help You Communicate With Your Adolescent About Puberty, Love, Relationships, and Sex

START EARLY ~ Use the window of opportunity and talk with your children early and often about issues like puberty, love, sex, and relationships.

START THE TALK Do not count on your child feeling comfortable enough to come to you with questions-you go to them.

CREATE AN OPEN DIALOGUE It is up to YOU to create the kind of home in which your child can ask questions about puberty, love, sex, and relationships.

TALK ABOUT PUBERTY, LOVE, RELATIONSHIPS, AND SEX Educate yourself! It is normal to feel uneasy talking with your child about puberty, love, relationships, and sex. Try to overcome your feelings.

SHARE YOUR VALUES Tell your child about your family's values regarding these issues.

LISTEN AS MUCH AS YOU TALK Listening lets your child know they are important.

BE HONEST Whatever your child's age, they need honest answers and information. Honesty will build trust for further talks.

BE PATIENT Let your child think at his/her own pace. Listen to what they are saying daily about people, places and situations that may be concerning.

USE TEACHABLE MOMENTS Moments in everyday life like TV shows and music are a perfect chance to start a talk about growing up, pregnancy, peer pressure or relationships.

TALK ABOUT IT AGAIN AND AGAIN They will not learn everything from a single discussion - give more than just one talk.
